Dr. Thay Sovannara has spent more than 17 years in medicine and is noted among Cambodia’s foremost experts in breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, family planning, and breast treatments as well as abdominal, pelvic and transvaginal ultrasounds.
Born in 1975 in Pursat, she originally decided to become a medical doctor purely out of an interest in helping the sick, happy to see her smiling patients after their recovery.
First graduating as a medical doctor from the University of Health Science in Phnom Penh in 2001 after a difficult period of study, Dr. Sovannara went on to work at the Sihanouk Hospital Center of Hope, Hope Worldwide Medical Center in Phnom Penh between 2003 and 2019. During her time at Hope, she was a principal investigator in an important cervical cancer study, publishing three articles related to cervical cancer screening in well-known journals. She then worked for a short period at the Singapore Medical Centre in Phnom Penh before joining Raffles Medical in November 2020.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Sovannara provided junior doctors, trainee medical students and midwives with training in direct visualisation screening, colposcopy, cryotherapy treatment, LEEP, IUD and implanon insertion. She was also involved in conducting routine check-ups for walk-in domestic and international patients and for NGOs and corporations, explaining their results and providing advice on healthy habits such as diet, hygiene, exercise and so on, as well as vaccinations and treatments if needed. She strongly believes that in the medical field, it is important not only to focus on treatment but also to educate people to understand diseases, helping them to prevent disease through their own efforts.
